Event Blog: Update and Reflection from Sleep Out 2021

REFLECTIONS:

Humbled!

  • It was harsh and brutal to sleep outside. I slept for barely 5 hours, with a lot of discomfort. Youths are sleeping in these conditions every night! (Temp on 18th Nov: High: 32º F and Low: 21º F)
  • Youth experiences homelessness because of desperation, interpersonal trauma, lack of options, mental illness, lack of education, and money. There is a need for trust, empathy, and engagement.
  • 350-12,000 people experience homelessness in Chicago every day(Look at the range!). Available shelter/care beds are approximately 150 or less on any given day.
  • Covenant House can not end this issue but provides the support necessary for the youths who suffer today.
  • Be kind when you see someone in that situation. I have a responsibility to help and spread awareness.
  • In the end, It was worth it. I am counting the blessings and grateful every day for everything I have.
