“Do you want to learn how to solve this by the holidays?” asked my eleven-year-old son. He got a new Rubik’s cube a few weeks back and solved the same with a few days of effort. He is pretty proficient with the same now. The initial thoughts in my mind before committing to the timeline were –
- It’s impossible for me (Rubik’s cube is one of the few things that I have put in my not-in-this-life-time list. The other notable one is bungee jumping😊)
- It’s too complex
- I am too old for this
And as usual, I do not have time!
I took a pause and thought again. Does not this sound very familiar to our life at work these days? We have an explosion of new technologies and software solutions growing unimaginably. Let’s look at the cloud providers and the capabilities of each platform. The cloud canvas of the three dominant cloud providers has 100+ comparable services, and you can add the additional layer of ISVs that run on these cloud platforms. Please see a short comparison here --> Compare AWS and Azure services to Google Cloud
Why am I telling this? Technology drives our new world and is no different from trying to solve the Rubik’s cube daily. Some key learnings –
- It’s not impossible to understand new technology if we keep ourselves updated with learning.
- New technologies are complex, but there is a pattern and logical progression of capabilities- just like the patterns you need to follow in Rubik’s cube.
- Find a good mentor or coach – This does not need to be a senior person. I learned a lot from my kid today. A junior can be a great technology mentor in this new world!
- Fortunately, there is no age limit for Learning, and you can stay tech-fit as long as you invest in Learning.
And last but not least, you can find time if something interests you.
It was an enjoyable Halloween Sunday. I solved the Rubik’s cube for the first time in my life! As with technology, the journey does not end here, and I need to improve my execution speed!
Happy Learning, everyone!
